fortyfivedownstairs is an independent Melbourne based theatre and gallery located in Flinders Lane in the CBD ; a cultural destination for standout emerging and established artists and performers and their audiences.
fortyfivedownstairs was established in 2002 to provide an affordable and supportive inner city venue for theatre performances, music and exhibitions by a wide range of artists and to show work of excellence to local, interstate and overseas audiences.
We have two gallery spaces, one small and beautiful, one large and magnificent. Our exhibitions change bi-weekly and vary widely in medium and style whilst retaining a high level of quality and a consistent curatorial direction.

Between Lines comprises a series of aerial photographs taken in the Kimberley, far north Western Australia. This remote area is embedded with stories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous inhabitants, transitory visitors and scarred by multinational companies resource development.

Melbourne artist Joey North’s new work is a body of sculpture in reclaimed timber and found objects .

Inspired by the notion of ‘swarm intelligence’, Megan Evans has created a large scale installation of eucalyptus leaves that ‘swarm’ across the walls of the gallery. Titled ‘The Fall’, the exhibition includes an extraordinary collection of leaves collected over many years, some from Healesville near her mother’s home which was surrounded by the recent fires.

“Tiny Tunes for Wee Australians” is an exhibition of small works on paper by Mexican artist Roberto Márquez. These works contain multi-cultural references as well as personal commentary on his Australian sojourns. Many of the works are intended to be humorous.

The delicate and detailed paintings and drawings in Stephen Nova’s exhibition Invisible Cities, are built up of many layers, like cities themselves, ‘cranes pulling up other cranes, scaffoldings that embrace other scaffoldings, beams that prop up other beams’, only then to be scraped back, erased and destroyed.

Ryan F Kennedy is an emerging artist from Brooklyn, New York who is in Melbourne as part of an inaugural artist’s residence organised by Walk to Art in conjunction with Melbourne Girls Grammar. RFK is working as artist in residence at Melbourne Girls Grammar for three months, from August to October.
