From the wonders of more than a century of cinema, to television, computer games and the screen-based art of the future, ACMI is the place to find out everything about the moving image.
World leading and state-of-the-art, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) celebrates, champions and explores the moving image in all its forms – film, television, games, new media and art.
Through a diverse and engaging annual calendar of award winning major exhibitions, film programs, live events, creative workshops, education programs, community activities and lending services, ACMI brings the best of moving image culture from across the globe to Australian audiences.
Visitors to ACMI can explore all about the moving image, engage with the industry and get hands-on by making their own moving image stories. In presenting these programs, ACMI celebrates the convergence of art and technology and broadly fosters innovation in Australia’s dynamic screen industries – from animation to games.
Starting life as the State Film Centre in 1946, ACMI evolved from being a Collection based institution to a hub for screening and industry advocacy, education and audience development to the point where it became a centrepiece of Federation Square on its opening in 2002. As the newest of the Victorian State Government’s arts agencies, since then ACMI has strengthened its world-class position and independent voice as one of only a handful of international moving image centres.
Today, it is recognised globally as a unique cultural institution that, like the subject matter it celebrates, is dynamic and constantly evolving. ACMI is internationally renowned for its award winning exhibition program, its position as the only cultural facility in the world with a dedicated games space, and its leadership role in self-generated content, particularly digital storytelling.
Driven by the desire to fulfil its vision as a true cultural centre of excellence, ACMI is now moving through an exciting new phase of development and growth.
The centrepiece of the next major phase of ACMI ’s growth is the creation of a new free visitor experience, which will transform the ground floor spaces within ACMI and provide audiences with an engaging permanent exhibition telling the story of over 100 years of the moving image.
As well as being a highly effective and exciting general-public draw, the flagship gallery will ensure ACMI makes a continuing mark on the world stage for innovative exhibition content and design. The aim is to create the most extraordinary exhibition of the moving image anywhere in the world – a bold, engaging and popular exploration of the history and future of the moving image.
Grounded in the contemporary period of radical media change, the gallery will look boldly to the future while also celebrating the work of the original masters and innovators, the icons and iconic moments, the people and the passion – and the contribution of Australians. The project is due for completion in 2008.
