CHLOE VALLANCE
The idea of sequencing imagery to suggest an underlying notion of an open narrative is a recurring theme in Chloe Vallance’s art making.
“I want my work to be read together as a series of glimpsed moments in time. To draw or paint a passed moment can relay an unfixed reality, validate an experience, and allow you to feel closer to the people and places captured in that moment.”
Step lightly between the branches, an exhibition of small colour pencil drawings and oil paintings at Hand Held Gallery, was developed from Vallance’s travels through Europe in 2009. “My travels led me to consider the tension between human figures and their environmental context.”

Defined as an artifical pause, the installation explores an emotional point in time observed by a son of his father’s post-war trauma; the idea of life moving forward while an emotional conscious is left behind.
